Burundi becomes 39th African country to sign bilateral relations with the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta.

On October 25, 2024, a historic diplomatic milestone was achieved as Burundi became the 39th African country to establish formal relations with the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta. Held at the Hilton Hotel in Addis Ababa, the signing ceremony was a moment of pride and significance for both parties.

Ambassador Willy Nyamitwe, the Permanent Representative of Burundi to the African Union, represented Burundi, while Ambassador Michael P. Murphy, the Permanent Representative of the Order of Malta to the African Union, signed on behalf of the Order.

In his speech, Ambassador Nyamitwe warmly acknowledged the importance of the event, saying, “today, we gather to witness and celebrate a moment of great historical significance—the signing of the Protocol on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of Burundi and the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta. This day marks the conclusion of a long journey, one that began all the way back in the 1970s, and has finally brought us to this meaningful milestone.”

He emphasized that this achievement represented not only a diplomatic success but also a testament to the commitment, perseverance, and dedication of the Burundi Embassy team in Addis Ababa. “We feel an immense sense of joy and pride,” he continued. “This achievement is more than just a diplomatic success; it is a testament to our commitment, perseverance, and dedication. We are truly honored to be the team that has brought this vision to reality.”

Reflecting on the path forward, Ambassador Nyamitwe noted, “With this signing, we now embark on the important work of implementing this protocol, building a partnership that will bring mutual benefit and strengthen ties between the Republic of Burundi and the Sovereign Order of Malta.” He highlighted the vision of Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, His Excellency Albert Shingiro, and the leadership of President Evariste Ndayishimiye, whose guidance was instrumental in reaching this moment.

As the event concluded, both parties looked forward to fostering a meaningful partnership that could bring tangible benefits, reinforcing a shared commitment to humanitarian values and international cooperation.
