Burundi Joins African Union in Commemorating Africa Day 2025

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — On the occasion of Africa Day 2025, H.E. Ambassador Willy Nyamitwe, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Burundi to the African Union, joined fellow African diplomats and AU officials in a solemn and symbolic ceremony held at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The commemoration, themed “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,” served as a powerful reminder of the continent’s enduring struggle for historical justice, recognition, and dignity. This year’s observance focused on acknowledging the legacy of slavery, colonialism, and systemic injustice, while calling for concrete reparative actions at both national and international levels.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, delivered a passionate address in which he urged African states and the international community to take bold and principled steps toward achieving justice for Africans and people of African descent worldwide. “Justice and reparations are long overdue,” he declared, “but Africa will not be held hostage by the pain of its past — we are moving forward with purpose and unity.”

The event featured reflections from Member States, artistic performances, and a reaffirmation of the African Union’s dedication to restoring the dignity of African people both on the continent and across the diaspora.

Ambassador Nyamitwe’s participation underlined Burundi’s strong attachment to the ideals of Pan-Africanism, solidarity, and historical redress. His presence signaled Burundi’s unwavering support for the African Union’s ongoing advocacy for reparative justice and collective memory.

Africa Day commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963 — the precursor to today’s African Union — and stands as an annual occasion to celebrate unity, resilience, and the shared aspirations of the African continent.
